When is the right time to hire a home care services organization? How much care does your loved one need? Is this a temporary or permanent situation? The answers to these, and other questions, are very personal and vary with each family. However, here are a few considerations that can help you make the right decision.

Personal Needs

• Make a list of what your loved one can and cannot do on their own. Then mark each item they cannot do with a timeframe of when you expect they will need help with that task. Be as detailed as possible.

Timeframe

• When and how often do you need a caregiver?
• Are services temporary or permanent?
• How many hours a day does my loved one need help?

Services

• What duties would you like the caregiver to perform and how often? List duties and frequency (i.e., driving mom to the doctor, cleaning house weekly, helping with bathing daily).
• Does your loved one need any specialized care, such as for dementia or incontinence?

Cultural Awareness

• Does your loved one have cultural habits or traditions, food preferences or limited English-speaking skills that need accommodation? Gender

• Some people may feel uncomfortable when a person of the opposite gender performs personal care tasks. We strive to serve our clients with respect and dignity and will be glad to accommodate same gender preference needs.

Personality

• Your loved one must feel comfortable around, and get along well, with their caregiver. Feel free to let us know if there are any special requirements for your caregiver. We want your loved one to feel at ease with their Advocate Home Care aide.
